Natural Alternatives for ADHD
There are many good reasons that people are now seeking natural alternatives for ADHD. Such ADHD treatment alternatives may be used alone or in combination with drug therapy. However, due to possible drug interactions, one must always consult a qualified health professional before doing so.
Even when drug therapy is chosen as a standalone treatment, it may engender long term health consequences and unwanted side effects.
In my opinion, the most sensible approach is to try natural alternatives first and foremost. A recent study found that children taking stimulant medications grow slower than they normally would -- possibly a half an inch per year.
Although adults with ADHD don’t need to worry about stunted growth, the health risks associated with long term use of stimulants may far outweigh the benefits. Such risks include: heart problems, high blood pressure and hallucinations. Natural alternatives for ADHD are a safer, gentler approach to treatment.
Children who are put on prescription meds for ADHD may also experience a range of other side effects, including: headaches, loss of appetite, stomach aches, mood swings, trouble sleeping, diarrhea and dry mouth. And these are just some of the more commonly documented one.
Even more troubling is that 19 children suffered a cardiac arrest after taking the drugs. The FDA required manufacturers to put a warning label on the boxes in 2006, but the Pediatric Advisory Committee still maintains that the drugs are safe for “normal” children.
Even if you decide that drug therapy is something you want to pursue, natural ADHD treatment alternatives can reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life and overall health.
A Naturopathic Doctor can help you find the solutions that are right for you. Below, you will see some of the therapies or treatment plans that he or she may suggest.
Dietary Changes
A recent study in the United Kingdom indicates that common food additives, preservatives, and artificial colorings cause hyperactivity in children. The study groups consisted of children with and without ADHD and all groups were adversely impacted.
It may take some time to get rid of all the fruit drinks, snacks and other foods that contain the additives, but allergists have believed for decades that it is well worth the effort. Kids, of course, may be resistant to the change at first. As such, it helps if the entire family makes a concerted effort to achieve an additive-free diet.
Supplements
Multiple studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids reduce symptoms of ADHD, both in adults and children. The best dietary source of omega-3 fatty acids is fatty fish, but public health organizations recommend that fish consumption should be limited in children. The safe alternative is a supplement containing fish oil that has been molecularly distilled to remove dangerous contaminants.
A really good multi-vitamin is also important. Vitamin deficiencies are sometimes the underlying cause when the problem is difficulty concentrating. By evaluating your diet and the nutritional supplements that you are currently taking, your ND can make specific recommendations for you or your child.
Behavioral Therapy
Behavior management, social skills training, counseling and family therapy are all valid ADHD treatment alternatives. Whether they are properly classified as natural alternatives for ADHD is a matter of opinion, but no drugs are required.
They do, however, require an investment of time and sometimes money, depending on the fees charged by the providers, but behavioral therapies help children learn techniques that can help them cope for life.
Counseling can also be helpful for parents of children with ADHD. All too often parents forget to take care of their own health and well-being. Your ND can help with that. Proper diet, exercise, nutrition and rest, as well as on-going support will help to ensure that you have the energy that you need to care for your child.
